Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation 2015 (Movie Review)

Dir: Christoper McQuarrie
Starring: Tom Cruise, Rebecca Ferguson, Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Alec Baldwin and Sean Harris
Dur: 2 hrs 5 mins
Genre: Action
Rating: 3.5/5
PG: Occasional swearing. A swimsuit shot. Violence and destruction.

The trailer of MI 5 created in me a really strong desire to watch the film. Unfortunately, when it came to the film, it turned out to be the case of the appetizer out-tasting the main course. I don’t consider the film a flop but it definitely didn’t live up to its benchmark.

The film opens with typical MI style excitement that one hopes will carry throughout the film. Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his buddies from the IMF (not International Monetary Fund but Impossible Missions Force) are involved in retrieving a stock of dangerous substance. The next thing we know the IMF is shut down under the forceful insistence of CIA chief, Hunley (Alec Baldwin) and Brandt (Jeremy Renner) and Benji (Simon Pegg) are absorbed into the CIA. IMF apparently has been functioning outside of protocol and causing more harm than good. The first part we can understand for we have been repeatedly shown that in the IMF the mission is the most important thing. The second part about causing more harm than good, seems like a sudden invention for a silly reason. Anyways, Ethan is wanted by the CIA, who go all out (which isn’t as great as it sounds) to find him but he as expected gives them the slip. While the CIA has Ethan as their top priority, he is after an elusive group called the Syndicate, which we later find out, has a very large membership and is responsible for a number of terror attacks across nations.

The difficulty Ethan faces is proving such a group exists. The whole film is thus like a battle played out between the Syndicate and the IMF, who get back together despite the severe consequences. Ethan makes an ally on the inside of the Syndicate. Ilsa (Rebecca Ferguson) is a British Intelligence agent operating undercover in the Syndicate. She doesn’t sound very British and has the looks and accent of an East European. Together the IMF with some help from Ilsa cause enough opposition to hamper all Syndicate plans.

The impossible task of bringing down the Syndicate before they bring down the entire world order ends tamely with the capture of the Syndicate’s head. A leader of such a powerful and well-organized group falls too weakly according to me. The film is embellished with fantastic technology and electrifying scenes but that is all they are, embellishments. The story isn’t as great as the trailer made it out to be. I also felt that build up was too long and not so thrilling. Ethan is once again raised to superhero status but this time I think he was pushed too far. The film is fun and has its share of excitement but impact…I feel it is quite forgettable.
