Spectre 2015 (Movie Review)
Dir: Sam Mendes
Starring: Daniel Craig, Lea Seydoux
Dur: 2 hrs 39 mins
Genre: Spy-thriller
Rating: 2/5
PG: Lots of kisses.
Spectre in my view, was more an empty shell than a real bomb. The trailer
and the hype promised a great film but all we got was a lot of fluff. The film
seemed at a tangent from the usual Bond-stuff. James (Daniel Craig), who is
past retirement and who should have had competition that forces him to stay on
top of his game, is a gallivanting agent who displays little care about the
agency. The new M (Ralph Fiennes) is a little overbearing and tries to get 007
in line. But that is just not the way things work. Of course, its not! This is
a James Bond film, isn’t it?
The film opens with a scene in Mexico where
Bond, covertly follows a suspect and just for the sake of it shares a kiss with
a random woman, whom we expect to play a little more than muse-role. Things go
awry and the city is thrown into mayhem. Bond, after the episode is reprimanded
and effectively ‘grounded’ but expectedly is in the thick of action once again.
The suspect he chased down in Mexico
puts him on the scent of a big fish, Spectre, who is apparently behind a host
of terrorist attacks in various parts of the world. Just how this Spectre came
into being and wields so much power isn’t clear but that doesn’t matter as long
as Bond has somebody’s ass to kick. This time however, the foe is formidable
and nearly reverses the outcome but as movies go, Bond come out on top after
all.
The story is interesting but has a slow and
incoherent build-up. There are too many scenes which don’t seem to make much
sense nor contribute to the overall development of the story. For example, Bond
evades an attack on his life and later makes out with his travelling companion
and fellow protagonist, Dr Madeleine Swann (Lea Seydoux). I confess
disappointment with the film. The gadgets too didn’t have an attractive power
save for the awesome vehicle which meets a watery end. In fact the whole story
meets a watery end, dissolving in aimless action and sensuality. I don’t want
to speak for everyone, but being a Bond fan, I feel let down. But to the film’s
credit I would rate it higher than Skyfall,
although the latter had more to offer in terms of plot. You wouldn’t want to
waste 2 and a half precious hours on this film. I suggest you do something more
productive with your time.
