Main Tera Hero (2014) Movie Review
Director: David Dhawan
Cast: Varun Dhawan, Ileana D’Cruz, Nargis Fakhri
If you’ve got a lot
of time on your hands and don’t know what to do with it, humour yourself with
this Varun Dhawan-Ileana D’Cruz starred rom-com, which will leave you gripping
your sides in laughter. This film is 2 hours of pure entertainment with a lot
of good dialogues, rocking music, ebullient dance sequences and crazy high-end
drama. The plot is a bit insipid but lets us know that the Hero will do whatever
it takes to get his Heroine (don’t all romantic movies portray the same theme?)
The movie opens with our debonair hero, Sheenu (Varun
Dhawan) receiving news of his failure to clear the final examinations (which he
takes as only a hero in reel life
can!) and his subsequent notorious act of kidnapping his professor’s daughter
on the day of her marriage and holding her as ransom for 2 marks (which is
apparently all he needs to pass!) And so, this unreal story continues, twisted
of course to make it funny and watchable. Sheenu decides to leave town and go
to the big city of Bangalore
in order to get a degree. A noteworthy trait of Sheenu is that he is a
religious guy and has friendly chats with God, whom he acknowledges in
different forms, as Shiva, Krishna , Ganesh and
Jesus. No matter where he sees their idols or pictures, he stops to have a chat
with them (perhaps something we can learn). He is also blessed with the grace
all devotees long for, i.e. immediate responses from God.
He enrolls himself in
a prestigious college, in which his friend and host in Bangalore , studies in. On the first day, he
encounters the love of his life, Sunaina (Ileana D’Cruz) and goes out of his
way to win her affection. Later, he is enlightened about her ‘special status’
of being the future bride of Angad Negi (Arunoday Singh), a hulk who passes
himself off as a ‘friendly neighbourhood policeman’ which he is evidently not,
despite taking classes for anger management which do him a lot of good really.
She is ‘forced’ into this relationship with him and she is not happy about it.
And so the tussle between our overly self-confident, sharp-tongued, garrulous,
macho hero and Negi, for the love of Sunaina, begins and continues throughout
the film. Negi challenges Sheenu to win the affection of Sunaina which he does
with ease and finesse.
Just when the lovers are cuddling up to each other,
tragedy strikes. Sunaina is kidnapped by a Gangster Don, Vikranth (Anupam Kher)
whose beautiful daughter, Ayesha (Nargis Fakhri) desires to marry Sheenu after
seeing him in action while on the train from his hometown to Bangalore . Thus, the second part of the film
begins, located in the posh bungalow of Vikranth in Bangkok . Sheenu is torn between the two
girls: the one he loves and the one who is infatuated with him. He engages in
satirical talk, mockery, double cross, scheming and such-like antics in order
to win back his true love. The drama is intensified when Negi and his faithful
sidekick, Peter (Rajpal Yadav) arrive to take back Sunaina in keeping with the
deal cut between Negi and Vikranth. Ayesha realizes that she actually loves
Negi and confides in Sheenu. Sheenu exploits this situation to try and free
himself from his imminent marriage to Ayesha, which he ultimately succeeds in
doing, thereby winning back the love of his life. The movie ends happily with
Negi and Ayesha marrying and Sheenu and Sunaina together again.
The film has relatively few songs which are of good quality
and coupled well with impressively choreographed dances. The unreal plot can be
forgiven as the comedy expiates it. The film upholds the idealism of youth and
satisfies the longing for a ‘happy ending’. Varun Dhawan and Ileana D’Cruz
deliver sizzling performances. Rajpal is a delight to watch. Arunoday Singh
leaves something to be desired. Anupam Kher executes his double role
brilliantly. The film provides hearty laughs and good entertainment, making it
an exhilarating experience.
