Jab Harry met Sejal (2017) [Movie Review]

Dir: Imtiaz Ali
Starring: Shah Rukh Khan, Anushka Sharma
Dur: 2 hrs 24 mins
Genre: Comedy-Romance
Rating: 3/10

One of the key reasons I don’t fancy Bollywood films is the lack of creativity and originality. If you doubt what I say, Think of any 10 romantic films you like and evaluate their plot. You are bound to find similarities. Forget about the ending (romantic films usually have a happy ending); you will notice that even the manner of introducing the lead pair to one another is pretty standard, not to mention a poor villain who is thrown into the fray just to add some spice to a spice-less, taste-less drama and dozens of firangi girls gyrating to stereotypical tunes. If you’re still a hopeless romantic and fan of Bollywood’s dull romance then maybe you ought to watch this film which is so full of clichés you begin to feel like a 13 year old has scripted the plot.

Shah Rukh is a pretty good actor but I don’t approve of his choice of films. Anushka is another performer I admire but I am saddened when people with such great talent and potential sign up to do such petty films. Films like these ought to be offered to young novices with big dreams and not to big guns with apparently nothing else to do. The plot is so ordinary you have to just wonder at Bollywood’s ability to turn just about anything into a film. The positive of this film is that you get to see beautiful scenes of Prague, Amsterdam, Vienna, Budapest and Lisbon. Except for this tourist experience the film has nothing else to offer. The romance is mushy and uncomfortably so. The drama slowly degenerates into a forced comedy and in the bargain makes a fool out of a lot of people – Indians, foreigners and viewers.

It’s pretty obvious that this film is for the sub-ordinary man who has vaporous dreams of beautiful sceneries, pretty women and mushy love. No realist will ever find even a hint of pleasure or satisfaction from this romantic disaster. Watch it if you’ve got plenty of time on your hands and don’t mind being fed the same nonsense in different plates.
