Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse (2018) [Movie Review]

Dur: 1 hr 57 mins
Genre: Animation
Rating: 9/10

WOW! Yes, that’s not just what I felt when I watched the film, it’s what I’m feeling even now as I sit and write this review. This is definitely the best animated film I have ever seen. The graphics are incredible. The story is brilliantly woven together despite the colliding universes and the blend of emotional and comic-like storytelling is simply fantastic. The directors deserve more than their fair share of credit for envisioning this project and seeing it through to such a beautiful ending. I’m glad this film won an Oscar; it deserves the fame and appreciation it receives.

For a superhero film, this was a novel storyline since even though there is an overlap of universes in the comics it hasn’t really made it to the silver screen. So, this didn’t only make this project novel it also made it incredibly challenging. However, the directors and their team have done a commendable job. The graphic designers and animation directors also deserve a word of praise for capturing the life of the comic and presenting it is an extremely realistic fashion. The film has a lot going for it, starting from its choice of protagonist. The interesting twist which actually launches the film is also noteworthy. But what really captured my attention was the effort to make the film seem like an animated comic. Sadly, that was restricted only to the initial part. It would have been great if throughout the film we could see snapshots of action or dialogue in comic fashion. Despite the predictability of the outcome, the film does well to shake off the traditional trappings of the superhero genre by focusing not so much on the defeat of the villain as much as on the character development of the hero. Again, that gamble I think worked very well in the film’s favour.

The film is not without its defects. Certain important characteristics were gradually forgotten especially in the penultimate scenes. Certain things could have been developed further, while others could have been developed better. Nevertheless, there is the hope that some of those could be taken care of in the sequel and the spin-off which are planned. All in all, I think this is a great film. If you haven’t seen it already I suggest you do.
