Gabbar is Back (2015) (Movie Review)

Director: Krish
Cast: Akshay Kumar, Shruti Haasan
Duration: 131 minutes

Do you believe that corruption exists within the Indian Government and administration? Are you fed up of hearing about it? Gabbar is. And that is why he is all out to weed out corrupt officials and destroy corruption. Gabbar is Back is set in contemporary India and proclaims a strong anti-corruption manifesto.

The lead character is Aditya (Akshay Kumar) a.k.a. Gabbar, who is an out-of-place university physics professor. His radicalism is not limited to his anti-corruption activity but extends to his teaching as well. To aid him in his anti-corruption agenda, he recruited several like-minded and committed youngsters. He claims to have the name of a villain and the deeds of a hero. Disillusioned with the judiciary, he takes the law into his own hands and metes out punishment to corrupt officials. He murders the most corrupt officials in various sectors by publicly hanging them along with a list of their corrupt practices. This serves as a powerful warning against corruption.

The police are at their wits end and seem to be making no headway in the Gabbar case. Gabbar’s project causes him to expose the corruption in a reputed hospital which subsequently leads to the death of the owner’s son. The owner, Digvijay Patil (Suman Talwar), a business tycoon, breathes fire when he discovers who is behind the death of his son and the disgrace of his hospital. Patil and Aditya have a history of bad blood beginning with Patil’s nonchalant treatment of Aditya’s pregnant wife’s death in which he had a hand. Aditya, on being told that no one can help him since they have been bribed, exacts revenge on Patil. In the ensuing fight Patil injures Aditya and leaves him for dead. When faced with Patil once again, Gabbar takes him out once and for all. With Patil out of the picture and corruption on the wane, Gabbar surrenders to the police and is hung for his crimes. Despite achieving his goals, Gabbar acknowledges his use of wrong means.

The story has a powerful message and flows coherently. The actors have done a good job of their roles. The songs except the theme song were not up to the mark. Neither was the choreography. Gabbar is Back inspires and motivates. It is likely to appeal to the young and it aims at galvanizing them to fight against corruption. Bad means for achieving a good end as shown in the film is not commended and even Gabbar is punished for his actions. While the film calls for action, the nature of the actions screened needs to be avoided and constitutional methods used.
