Wakefield (2016) [Movie Review]

Dir: Robin Swicord
Starring: Bryan Cranston, Jennifer Garner
Dur: 1 hr 36 mins
Genre: Drama
Rating: 7/10

The trailer of this film grabbed my attention. The concept intrigued me and the film stayed true to its spirit. The story is well-told and is the story of many of us. Perhaps things will not go the same with us but the conclusions we will arrive at are the same.

Howard Wakefield (Bryan Cranston) is the protagonist around whom this tale revolves. He is a respectable and well-to-do lawyer who grow weary of the mechanical lifestyle he is living. His tensed marriage only contributes to his ennui with life. One providential evening, he is curious to know what would happen if he could somehow escape his life. His choice leads him to living in an attic overviewing his house and living life a tramp, all for the sake of curiosity. He carefully observes his family’s reactions and regales us with his witty and heart-felt comments. The film has a lot of speaking, so those who don’t fancy such films will find themselves growing restless. Even if you don’t fancy such films I would encourage you to watch it solely for the sake of the message that it effectively portrays.

The film is well shot and directed. The actors are really challenged to convince us with their drama skills for conversation is minimal. The concept is relevant and the moral is even more so. The film shows what life is like without basic amenities but it also highlights the other side of life. It compellingly indicates that life is more than having things and being great. The little things of life matter, and they matter quite a bit. Hats off to the writer, director, cast and crew for bringing this timely and relevant story to the big screen and to our lives.
