The Foreigner (2017) [Movie Review]

Dir: Martin Campbell
Starring: Jackie Chan, Pierce Brosnan
Dur: 1 hr 54 mins
Genre: Action-thriller Rating: 5/10

The film is a typical revenge thriller. Jackie has aged considerably but yet delivers some of his trademark fighting scenes. Overall, the film is pretty dull except for a few twists in the plot. Nothing is really worth mentioning, neither the dialogues nor the action. It’s all plain.

The film is based on a novel written by Stephen Leather called ‘The Chinaman’. I have to say the plot is quite fantastic. One man takes out an entire group single-handedly with no assistance, but this is to be expected with revenge films (remember the Taken trilogy). The police are reduced to idiotic bystanders who play no role except at the very end and that too in an incredulous fashion. This film has no comedy at all and exaggerates the action and drama for cinematic effect. The plot is not very thick and many holes reveal themselves through its course. Pierce’s Irish accent is worth the hearing. But apart from it, little else is worth watching.

Take my advice; don’t waste your time on this film (except if you’re a Jackie Chan fan, of course). It’s not one of Jackie’s best films and it lacks everything his films normally have except for a little action.
