Dur: 1 hr 39 mins
Genre: Fantasy Drama
Rating: 7/10

An unexpectedly great film. As a matter of fact, I stumbled upon this film in a passing reference in a talk show. I was intrigued by the title and true to its name the film, delivered on what it promised. To state the fact, the film is a story on the invention of lying. The story is brilliantly written by Ricky Gervais himself, who also directed, produced and starred in it.

The setting is a world where everyone can only speak the truth. One fine day, a man, Mark Bellison (Ricky Gervais) who is dealt a harsh hand of life, stumbles upon a lie and enjoys its consequence. He then, goes on lying to improve his position in life but ultimately comes to the realization that though lying can twist the world into whatever you want it to be, it doesn’t always ensure your ultimate happiness.

The film sarcastically takes a dig at our social stereotypes, ethical standards, religious beliefs and generic expectations. It bluntly portrays the real meaning behind the ‘politically correct’ words we say. The contrast between absolute truthfulness and the lie is made quite evident and so are its consequences. What’s wonderful is that the film ends on a positive note although it seemed to be heading nowhere.

Considering the fact that Ricky was behind the film, humour has a big role to play however, the humour of the film is quite subtle and mainly sarcastic. Nevertheless, a lovely message goes across. The film offers plenty of food for thought. Some of the key questions that struck me were: How often do we mean what we say and say what we mean? Is it possible to be truthful all the time? When is it okay (if it is ever) to tell a lie? What qualifies as a lie? What are the common lies that our world preaches?

I think the film is hard hitting as much as it is humorous and has something to offer in terms of food for thought if not entertainment. Don’t stop with reading this review. Go find a copy of the film and watch it! It’s great!

P.S. I’m not lying
