Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018) [Movie Review]

Dir: J. A. Bayona
Starring: Bryce Dallas Howard, Chris Pratt,
Dur: 2 hrs 8 mins
Genre: Sci-fi Adventure
Rating: 8/10

The sequel to the popular Jurassic World that released in 2015, Fallen Kingdom picks up from where its prequel left off. We are taken back to the infamous Jurassic World that lies in ruins after the disastrous events outlined in the previous film. Much to no one’s surprise, the dinosaurs haven’t given up on the fight to survive and this film builds itself around that feeling. The dinosaurs are faced with a life and death situation and their future seems to be fading into the darkness of extinction once again.

The island which the dinosaurs inhabited is facing destruction thanks to an active volcano. Lockwood, one of the original fathers of Jurassic world, desires to save the dinosaurs and relocate them to a safe zone but as things normally do, his plan blew up (quite literally!) The evil conniving of his aid, Eli, leads to the drama that forms the body of this film. The dinosaurs are once again turned into objects for business except this time around, the business is far more shadier and sinister. To cut a long story short, the dinosaurs are in as much danger as they were before any attempts to rescue them were made and a bunch of unlikely heroes take it upon themselves to turn things around. Their efforts are marked by numerous challenges and near fatal encounters, but they somehow come out on top.

The film is really entertaining. In fact, I began watching it with the intention of killing a little time but soon found myself glued to it and unable to move until the credits rolled. The plot has a nice feel. The action is smooth and the suspense is palpable. The strength of the film is in these aspects but the few lines that are given to Jeff Goldblum, who plays Dr. Malcolm, a renowned scientist who is asked to advise the Senate with regard to policy about the future of dinosaurs, are nothing short of fantastic. They take the cake. The film rests and revolves around them. They are the best part of the film for me. The introduction of Lockwood’s granddaughter was a tad unnecessary although she plays a significant role in the movie. I feel her chief reason for existence was to ensure a happy ending but this is open to debate.

Nevertheless, the film is pretty good. It’s not for nothing that it is the 3rd highest grossing film of 2018 and the 12th highest grosser of all time.
