The Age of Adaline [2015] {Movie Review}

A fantastic tale of love and age and how the two try hard to outdo each other but end up complementing one another. Adaline Bowman [Blake Lively] was a beautiful young woman who married and had a baby but whose life changed forever after she met with a fateful accident. Due to a DNA reaction, which is supposed to be discovered in 2035, she stopped aging and remained 29 for over 70 decades. Her everlasting youth was no pleasure. In fact it began to tear her apart. She was forced to remain on the move for fear of being pursued as a science specimen. Her daughter, Flemming grows old without and before her mother.

Adaline can never resign herself to a single place or a single person save her daughter who she passes off at different times as her sister and even grandaunt. Her resolve however is put to the test when she encounters the debonair, Ellis played by Michiel Huisman. She falls in love again, something she had tried so hard to avoid because her condition only allows love that ends in heartbreak. She complains of having had too many but encouraged by her daughter she decides to pursue this love. Love takes her down a difficult and complicated path as she engages William [Harrison Ford], Ellis’ father and her old flame, who recognizes her and spirals into his own world of fantasy and heartbreak.


The final drama is what really makes the film worth the while. Blake is alright; a beautiful face and a shallow personality. Michiel’s character is insipid and seems to be a forced intrusion into the life of Adaline. The film has got an old-fashion touch and a nearly failing attraction. The story is subtly fanciful  and good with dialogue. The Age of Adaline may not qualify as a great romance but it has its charm.

The Challenge of Mercy

Pope Francis has declared this as the year of mercy, and up until now plenty of reflections have been preached and published on mercy. Perhaps each of us too have made our own reflection on the theme of mercy. Since the inauguration of the year, my mind has often reverted to this theme. Every night when I make an examination of conscience, I evaluate myself: my thoughts, words and deeds vis-à-vis mercy. Andadhun (2018) [Movie Review]

Dir: Sriram Raghavan Starring: Ayushmann Khurrana, Radhika Apte and Tabu Dur: 2 hrs 18 mins Genre: Black Comedy Crime Thriller Rating: 3/10 I watched this film on good recommendations. It was hailed as one of the best films of 2018. The mystery surrounding the film went well with the mystery that was actually the film itself. I learnt a hard lesson after watching this film and that is not to go by what other’s say about a film. Given Bollywood’s film making standards, I should not have been surprised. Yet, I found myself pleasantly surprised at the end product. Andadhun tells a complex tale of blindness in a world that is not blind even though it appears so. Confused?
