Spiderman: Homecoming (2017) [Movie Review]

Dir: Jon Watts
Starring: Tom Holland, Michael Keaton, Robert Downey Jr.
Dur: 2 hrs 10 mins
Genre: Superhero
Rating: 4/10

Spiderman is often referred to as the “friendly, neighbourhood” kind of guy and even in this film he is referred to as such (mostly by himself) but this film shows us an other-worldly spiderman. He is no more relatable in human terms. He is upgraded to the 21st or perhaps 22nd century with an iron man like suit battling against wayward humans with intergalactic weapons.

Set in the post-Civil War, we find a group of simple scrapdealers who devise a scheme to keep their threatened business of selling weapons with alien technology alive. Just when things are going smoothly, “friendly, neighbourhood spiderman” who is simply a confused adolescent spins a web around their plot only to create further complications. Surprisingly the destruction is kept to a minimum. After all, how much can an adolescent with a spidey suit destroy? The film dovetails a wannabe Avenger subplot with a run-of-the-mill story that ends up in a webbed mess. Honestly, I was disappointed from start to finish. I can hardly find anything worthwhile in this 2 hour long drudgery. The direction was mediocre but everything else from acting to camera work to plot to sound effects and production were simply below average. I am shocked that Marvel could have allowed one of its great superstars to be ruined in this fashion.

There is no doubt that Spiderman is one of Marvel’s most popular heroes. Just looking back at the number of films and reboots this series has had is testimony enough. Unfortunately, this was the worst Spiderman film I have ever seen and one of the worst Marvel films as well alongside the Blade Trilogy, Deadpool and Logan. The effort to continue the Avengers story is getting tiresome not so much for the audience as much as for the producers. This lethargy is easily noticeable in this film. It is as if the producers were wondering what to do to keep the Avenger’s legacy alive and decided to give the audience a flimsy story on a lose thread of the Avenger fabric. I sincerely recommend you not to waste your time on this film. Even the trademark Marvel humour is absent here. For a Spidey fan like myself, this is depressing. This wasn’t “Homecoming” it would better have been called “Farewell”. I’m sincerely looking forward to the other Marvel flicks scheduled and hope that they don’t disappoint like this.
