Point Blank 2010 (Movie Review)

Original French: A bout portant
Dir: Fred Cavaye
Dur: 1 hr 30 mins
Genre: Action
Rating: 4/5
PG: Swearing and gun-violence.

This a French film dubbed in English. I watched it on T.V and must confess, I really enjoyed the film. I don’t usually watch foreign language films, firstly because I have a slight bias against them (lack the quality of Hollywood) and secondly because dubbing, in a way robs the film of its character. Despite these, Point Blank was a great watch.

The film opens with a chase scene that concludes with an accident. We are then introduced to two of the protagonists, a young couple expecting their first child. The husband, Samuel Pierret (Gilles Lellouche) is an orderly in the hospital in which our third protagonist is recuperating after his accident. Hugo Sartet, (Roschdy Zem) is a well-known conman who is wanted for the murder of a business magnate, Meyer. Samuel helplessly watches his wife being abducted and is blackmailed to help Sartet escape. Thus, Sartet and he begin their journey together with the police on their tail. Just when it begins to look familiar the plot thickens. Instead of a story of a husband’s heroic adventure to rescue his pregnant wife, we are given a husband and criminal’s joint quest to save themselves from a ruthless police force and if they’re lucky to achieve their respective goals.

The film is extremely fast-paced and has an exciting plot. It is well written and the camera and editing work is fairly good. The actors are not great but I felt that Gilles and Nadia (wife) acted very well. The film hardly had a dull moment. Its realistic character made it appealing. It concealed a few surprises and was overall a good film. Lovers of action films will find this very entertaining.
